This sucks balls, just moved house and landed in a medium term lease with only network locked down internet access (except for the expensive wireless data I am chewing through every few days). There is an ethernet cable in my room that I haven't checked to see if it is live yet. Have to dig out my old modem and see what flashes. Getting around the network locks doesn't seem feasible, but I have seen IT guys at old jobs with there own modems plugged into similar set-ups but probably tighter security on the network.
