Two California women were arrested after an Interstate 70 traffic stop Thursday night yielded 2.6 pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside a pillow in the backseat of a car, according to arrest affidavits.
Elizabeth Valdez, 23, of Perris, Calif., Agnes Ahn, 23, of Rosemead, Calif., were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to distribute and special offender charges after their vehicle was stopped just after 8 p.m. by Western Colorado d**g Task force officers. Valdez and Ahn on Friday were ordered jailed on bonds of $40,000 and $25,000, respectively.
An officer, who was parked off the roadway around mile marker 5, started following an eastbound car after it was observed in the left-hand lane with no other vehicles around it, the affidavit said.
Valdez, who was driving, told officers they were traveling to Denver from California to visit her father for one day, the affidavit said.
Documentation for Valdez’s vehicle drew suspicion, the affidavit said. While the paperwork showed the vehicle had 8 miles on the odometer when it was leased in December 2009, the vehicle when searched Thursday had 72,100 miles, the affidavit said.
After Valdez was told she was free to leave, she allegedly consented to a search of her vehicle, the affidavit said.
A white pillow on the back seat held two hard objects, both packages with suspected meth, the affidavit said. Valdez told officers “the stuff was hers and Ahn had nothing to do with it,” the affidavit said.
“While placing Valdez and Ahn in custody there was never any emotion or surprise from Ahn,” a deputy observed.
Public defenders who spoke on behalf of the women during court appearances on Friday said neither have criminal history, aside from a petty theft conviction for Valdez.
