Easter Sunday Memory
Again, I have nothing that is necessarily constructive, intelligent, or well thought out - just something my son reminded me of yesterday while talking on the phone with him.
He's in the Mediterranean - on an Aircraft Carrier right now - we were reminiscing about Easters past.
We don't and never really have celebrated the religious aspects of Easter, but we did the eggs and baskets, etc.
Rachel (my now ex wife) knew I was going to be home for Easter for only the 2nd time since our k**s were born. My k**s (two at the time) had no idea.
Rachel was going to surprise them. Number 2 was really too young to know what was going on - this was mostly for number one who was nearly 5 at the time.
The plan was that while they were gone buying eggs and supplies to die for Easter (on Friday), I would go in the house and hide in our bedroom.
When the k**s and Rachel were dying eggs, I would sneak downstairs and surprise them.
The plan worked flawlessly except for one thing.
I was waiting up at the top of the stairs when I heard the garage door open. I was so excited. I hadn't seen them for about 9 months.
I heard them open the house door from the garage.
Rachel told number one to go to the kitchen and he could help her get things ready to begin dying.
My son no sooner entered the house when I heard him say "Where is daddy"?
Rachel said "Daddy is at sea. He won't be home for a few days".
Number one said "No Mommy - Daddy is here. I smell him".
Rachel said "What do you mean"?
He replied "I know Daddy is home because I always know when he's home because he smells like the Navy".
I couldn't hold back. I ran downstairs - Rachel was tearing up. I was tearing up. Number one gave me a big hug and a kiss and shouted "I knew it"!
When we were on the phone, he told me that the first time he boarded his carrier, he got emotional because it smelled exactly how the house smelled for about a week after I returned from sea. Jet fuel, grease and who knows what else.
I hadn't forgotten that memory - I have talked about it in the past couple of years with friends.
But hearing him relate it to me was magnificent!
Have a great weekend and make some memories with your loved ones!

I'm just a sentimental fool I suppose.
