A few thoughts on self-esteem

As some of you are already aware, I have two teenage god-daughters. One of my major concerns in recent months has been the apparent lack of self-esteem amongst young women, something I see echoed in many postings from female members here. Considering how many men are willing to put women down, there is clearly no reason for the targets of their misogyny to become complicit with this gender attack.

So long as women devalue themselves, the laziest male minds will find excuses for their inherent sexism. After all, it is so much easier for persecutors to pretend their attacks aren't personal when those who are persecuted are in some sense compliant. And let's be frank, there are many women here on this website who are prepared to endure the sexist slurs thrown at them merely for being a member. When some of these ladies are also willing to share glimpses of their bodies with a global audience, as a personal decison (albeit influenced by the Xham ambience), you have to keep in mind that true intercourse is more than two sweaty bodies slapping against each other.

The bottom line: so long as men fail to value women, both fail to value themselves. We are all the same, struggling for recognition, and it is absurd to discriminate in such a wanton manner against more than half the world's population.

to sexy44g : I certainly didn't pick up that vibe from your profile page, which was well-written and forthright. As for your presence on this site, so long as you're enjoying yourself, I can't see how that's indicative of low self-respect. Sounds like your family should look in a mirror before criticising you.

Rodent1, unfortunately women do suffer from low self-esteem. I am guilty as charged. I grew up in a family that always see my faults. I am too fat, too stupid and not a good enough daughter. By society's definition we are expected to be the nurturers and caregiver. Sometimes we never take the time to be good to ourselves. Do I have no self-respect because I enjoy being on this site? I guess it all depends on the person here.

to eellee : They've both got good heads on their shoulders, but they also know that if something untoward did occur and either of them needed somewhere to stay till their parents cooled down, they're always welcome in my home. They've been family since the day I took the job on, and family brings with it responsibility.

I don't know if sex and self-esteem go together. Just because a person likes or has sex doesn't mean they don't value themselves or others. There is a lot of pressure these days for girls or women to be more of a slut, men included, but then men have always been sluts. Good luck with your god-daughters. If you can keep them from getting pregnant or not getting an STD I would say that's an accomplishment.

to bigharv69 : Worse, it was a boring video. And a pretty rubbish song. If you're going to strip naked to publicise a tune, at least make it a decent one.

Julia, that that my comments might be of some support to you is so amazing. You're clearly aware how much I enjoyed our first chat online, so it should come as no surprise when I remind you how much I appreciate your company here. "Too nice"? Not in the least.

If ever you do feel down -- as I did, just a couple of days ago, case of 'the glooms' -- just PM me, okay?

Thank you so much, Julia. In case you weren't aware, you partly inspired this particular blog. Our first late night chat paralleled a conversation with my youngest god-daughter; on both occasions, I sensed a lack of self-confidence. You're a smart woman, but I suspect that there are times when you forget that.

I know what you mean. You shouldn't feel concerned or worried about what you're going to get on the other end. You should be treated with respect and swept off your feet. Not feel like a cheap slut. There's a lot of men here, experienced men that know how to treat a woman such as yourself. We do exist. Let the boys go.

Yes! I totally agree with you. There are a lot of idiots on here that show so much disrespect that I end up blocking them all together. As I read your writing, one thing I couldn't help thinking about is the media. Magazine ads, TV. Commercials, music videos.... they all show or sell the views how woman should look like and what they should be wearing and how they should behave. Here we have for example Britney Spear and Hannah Montana. Both of which my daughter loved back in the day. One turned out to be a train wreck and the other turned out to be some sort of sex deprived idiot on stage that really is confusing for her now. She looked up to these people. Had their posters on her wall. For a 13 year old just getting into her womanhood, it's up to me as a father to fix the damage that the media and her idols have created and prove to her she is perfect just the way she is. I am her role model. My wife is her role model. We show her the truth.

I enjoyed your blog. Thank you.

Even if lady's are compliant, they should still be treated with respect , and not subjected to abuse.
