Vintage or Retro

I just decided to start a folder of pictures that go back to early advent of the camera lol. What "I" consider vintage is anything up to 1950. I sometimes think that maybe i should take it up to 1960, but for some reason still balk at the idea lol.

I think its the 'era' thing...Playboy came out then and almost main-streamed the nudes or idea of it, and so to me, cut the 'naughty' out of it. If i go by look of the gals as well, then it would take us part way through 50s. But the hairstyles and cloths of the 30s especially, that does it for me. But with advent of Bettie Page, i consider it a stopping point and made it easy...up to 1950 is Vintage (pics) and 1950 up through the 70s (maybe) 80s is Retro (pics). However, anyone born and looking back 20 or 25 years may consider all since they were born 'vintage' lol.

When you look in the folders of mine for Retro and Vintage, you'll see a definite difference in the pictures. Just enjoy them for what they are and agree that we all have our idea's on what time frames would be retro and vintage for each of us.

I like the vintage work. One part that appeals to me is that women didn't have birth control like today so they really were taking a risk of getting knocked up. Kind of adds an edge to the scene.

Kind of a question of semantics really. Personally I enjoy anything that has that early 60's and earlier feel to it.especially the black and white photos that feature women in heels, stockings, and lingerie, and well done hairstyles. Call it Vintage or Retro; I just call it hot.

To me Vintage is the old movie camera, super 8 films and Retro is when video was first used.
But then it's all a personal point of view and who cares because all those old films rock !!

The terms were really applied to clothing i think to start. But folks really applied the terms vintage and retro as they wanted to to brand their stores or "looks" as it may be. Late 80s when they were vhs tape crazy, they named the porn from 60s on up to through the 80s as retro. So a few folks were bringing the really old stuff from 50s down through 30s and 40s vintage. The high class collectors called it antique erotica for the 30s/20s and earlier. So thats why i really stay with the naming of 60s up through 80s as retro. Anything before 1960 to me is vintage/antique erotica.

So: 1960 - 1989 = Retro
1930 - 1959 = Vintage

Anything before 1930 can be Antique...lol. Hope that helps. You can see the difference in the folders of mine. There may be a few in the retro folder who started out in the 50s. Bettie Page is one such gal who is from the 50s.

to egines : Indeed they are. Which is why i now just take the position that 'age' is what determines a persons view of what is retro. Many use it (reason) in terms of cloths to make their point lol. If that were the standard, then you have furniture which is vintage, antique and retro lol. Oh well...

A necessary and useful clarification of two terms that are constantly mixed.
