A few thoughts on video ratings

Since I began posting videos on this site, I've noted with some curiosity the levels of response I get to various kinds of material. It appears that to get a regular 100% positive rating, I'm required to focus upon videos containing hardcore sex, as more softcore footage almost invariably receives a rating of 80% or lower. I must say I find that rather disappointing, since it indicates a fixation among many Xhamster members upon the explicit rather than the erotic. For my own part, I often find viewing erotica of greater emotional impact than mere penetration, but perhaps that's because I grew up in a period when the former was more easily available than the latter. Well, it's their loss.

unfortunately it depicts much of society today, where I want it now attitude is all to prevalent, and like a lot of porn , including vids , I have uploaded, foreplay has disappeared ,I hate to think what love making is like for a lot of the younger generations if they base it on what they see on porn sites today.

The downvoting option here is moronic by nature, and begs for trolls to have fun with it. Xhamster should be eliminating this current system and easily establish a ratio of "likes" to views to equate an approval rating.

I guess the hardcore is what "moves the needle" around here. Interestingly, I've noticed something else too. Usually, each day there will be a streak of maybe 10 videos that not only don't receive 80%. Instead, they all receive thumbs down. I suspect some disgruntled user with 10 different accounts is going around giving indiscrimate thumbs down.

to Au_Loressi : Interesting analysis, Aurélien. I've noticed a small number of my videos have attracted a hefty 'anti' vote, which leads me to wonder if one or two people are actively voting it down.

I am so glad you write this. I have found the same when it comes to my stories, so much so that I have rewritten some really good erotica so that it is more of a hard core jerk manual to get higher ratings. I like the softer erotic stuff more so you will get a thumbs up from me every time. Xoxo. -belle

Further precision to make my point clear: good people don't down-vote the videos they dislike, they just ignore them. Bad people enjoy down-voting the videos that bore them. If you add the putative rule that usually bad people enjoy tasteless videos and dislike the beautiful one, as a result you have: good videos with lower ratings than cheesy ones.

I completely agree.

The fact is that XH uses a very rudimentary (and dummy) formula to compute the ratings: n% is merely 100*u/(u+d), where u and d are respectively the numbers of up-votes and the numbers of down-votes. With 0 votes giving 100%. So do the maths: one jackass downvoting gratuitously a video is enough to block it under 100%. You see, it's the dark side of the force

For me, a post which gets 100% should probably not provide a good content (precisely because of the ratings rule). Good videos would be, say, between 80% and 97%.

I'm not a specialist, but I know that on the internet there exist much better formulas or algorithms to yield much more accurate and more meaningful ratings. XH chose the easy way. Personally I don't pay much attention to the ratings here. Well... actually there are some exceptions: for instance I was upset to see that this wonderful scene http://xhamster.com/movies/2159993/girl_on_girl_716.html got such a low rating
