The Worst Sin Of Adult Filmmaking
Of course it must be lack of variety. This is especially pronounced in too many amateur efforts, but their makers are usually just imitating what they have seen in commercial products and mistakenly believe connotes erotic appeal. How many times have you been subjected to camera angles that relentlessly focus on grinding genitalia to the exclusion of everything else? I understand that amateur situations, in particular, may not always lend themselves to mobile cinematography because of equipment limitations and the absence of anyone other than participants who might be able to act as independent camera operators (and can also impart a kinetic energy to the shoot). However, if you're going to produce a video that you intend will eventually arouse either yourselves or other audiences, you need to keep in mind what will ultimately be interesting for them to watch (and, presumably, masturbate to). Closeups of penises, vaginas and other body parts, if unrelieved by cutaways to faces and the mise-en-scene of the environment, quickly become tedious and boring--ironically the very opposite of the videographers' original intent. It's our faces that ultimately distinguish us as individuals and faces are also important for the emotional impulse they deliver. I thrill to see the expressions crossing a woman's countenance while she's having intercourse or enjoying an orgasm because it helps me establish a vicarious bond with her, thereby heightening my own masturbatory pleasure. The desire for privacy on the part of video participants who deliberately obscure their identities may be understandable, but, again, you should also understand what is sacrificed thereby. I don't look for any improvement in this chief pornographic "sin" anytime soon, but just remember that in erotica, as in everything else, variety remains the spice of life....
