This shit will kill you - heading home.

Well, I’m on my way back from my “trip”. The most important thing I learned is that I will never belittle, ridicule, berate, or insult MICU doctors for the rest of my career. In the Covid era, their job is much harder than mine.
For my clinical colleagues, sometimes surgical intensivists say “our patients are the sickest in the hospital!” Until you take care of proned Covid patients, who need HD lines, on 18 of Levo with a MAPs of 50, 100% FiO2, PEEP 20, with a pCO2 of 70 and a pO2 of 40, with a chest x-ray that looks essentially opaque, you’re not taking care of the sickest patients in the hospital.

i had had all 4 vaccinations and had managed to avoid the beastly covid UNTIL, i went into my local general university hospital for an electrocardiogram and caught it from the guy in the next bed - what should have taken a hospital stay of a couple of days turned into 19 days - but at least i got another stent out of it !!

I am a doctor.  America may think we are over Covid, but Covid has another idea. It will be years before we fully understand and know all of the lingering effects.

to cltprofguy : We the people, in order to form a "more" perfect union...everyone has their own self-interests, but this country has shown more times than not, than when there is a worthy cause to rally around, that we care about our communities, our institutions, and our way of life first...self-interests second....more recently, the citizens of this country have shown themselves to be too easily divided and unable to think critically, in my estimation, a vastly improved public education system is in the national security interests of this country...it's extremely troubling to realize how different the teaching is from district to district and state to state...what's omitted in the teaching in some districts and included in others...it's in everyone's interests that this country continue to evolve, and adapt, re-invest, and improve our "more" perfect union...it's about our families, communities, and our nation, vice what's best for me...oh, and... gorgeous wives, girlfriends, and unattached women...

Thanks for all of your efforts to keep people alive.  Medical workers from EMS to nurses and doctors have gone through hell during the last year, and will bear the emotional scars for a long time to come.

to pacpl1 : I do appreciate that.  My hat is off to those nurses and nursing assistants who don't make a lot of money and do it for love of work and of others.

Thank you for updating us and posting this. Those who ignore this terrible disease will not come out of it in good shape. I'm in a related field and it is just devastating to watch how many suffer. Bless you for what you do and have seen.

to marriedaMILF : I've actually never watched that. Maybe I should. But I wear it anyway. There's no GOOD reason not to. I mean, even if you are skeptical, why not wear one ?  The messages coming from some people are definitely mixed, and that's a political discussion I suppose. But if it doesn't hurt, why not wear it. or in my case, it seems, just stay at home and do all your meetings on Zoom.  Of course, many people, including you, do not have that luxury. I get that. In which case, for the rest of us, we should wear it to protect you and those of you working and risking to save others. I just watched the CEO of Pfizer say basically the same thing to and about people who say they will not take even a proven safe vaccine. It's not about you,, he said to them, it's bout everyone else you come in contact with.  Keep the faith sir....be safe...and not incidentally, keep that gorgeous wife of yours safe....one day I have this dream of  visiting your farm cottage..

to cltprofguy : That is very kind.  I tell people to watch a few episodes of House.  They seem to intubate every show!  That vision should be enough to have you practice a safe lifestyle and wear the damn mask.

A voice of reason and knowledge, Based on years of education, training and experience. Mixed in with a health (bad word) does of real life observations. We can say all we want about the inconveniences of masks, of not seeing our children and grandchildren, of eating at home instead of a restaurant. But in the total picture, isn't it a small price to pay, in order to avoid the sorts of things you have to deal with. I'd certainly like to meet you someday....but not with you leaning over me with full PPE and tubes sticking out of me because I was selfish or bored,, or unable to cope with the inconveniences of distancing. I DO realize I am fortunate. I can work from home. I have technology that allows me to serve my clients "virtually"..I can actually cook at home like my parents did.  You, on the other hand, are an angel, and doing what you are trained to do. I salute you sir. And your service is as much on the front lines as in coming back to preach what you have seen and experienced to the rest of us...

Feels a little odd to leave this comment next to my profile picture, but thanks for saying that.  I've got family and friends working in hospitals and even those not in ICU's are struggling to care for COVID patients.  What you've said is really important.
