Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo
"And now for something completely different". The Announcer (John Cleese)..............So the first concert I ever went to I was probably around the age of 10. My step mother took me and my brothers to go see Louis Armstrong at some hotel circa 1965 give or take a year. I want to say Carol Channing performed with him and they performed Hello Dolly together but it was a long time ago. Although I can not remember specifics I do remember an all around great feeling watch him perform. Later in my school days, 6th grade, I was a huge Turtles fan, So Happy Together....anyway my friend Alan secured 2 tickets and we were going to go see them except Dad said no. I was crushed. Moving through the years i became quite a fan of rock and roll. a****ls, Beatles, Stones ect. but I also became a fan of the San Francisco sound. Quicksilver, Airplane, It's a Beautiful Day ect. In fact my neighbor was the 2nd lead singer of the band. She was so cute. Anyway I started collecting albums, still have them. Over 500 to date. Towards the end of high school I went to my first concert since Louis Armstrong (save the Jr. High concerts which I was a part of). Lee Michaels with Frosty the Drummer and Lydia Pence and Cold Blood and a 3rd act at Winterland. OMFG. Unfuckingbelievable. Girls were frolicking everywhere, people were partying everywhere, sharing everything, it was amazing. I had never experienced anything remotely like that. And not just the surreal surroundings of the crowd but the music was unbelievable. If anyone has ever listened to Cold Blood with Lydia Pence singing, the horns, wow. Lee Michaels is in a class of his own. All time favorite. The music, he on organ and Frosty on drums put out was astonishing. I was hooked right then and there. I had to go back and I did, many many times. Some best of the best, Traffic, One of the last shows they did before reuniting. Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood, RIP and Steve Winwood. Just the 3 of them. Ended the show arm in arm singing John Barleycorn a cappella. Beautiful and so emotional....Alvin Lee and Ten Years After. I fucking loved the double live album, I had to see them, They did not disappoint. Spectacular. Also saw them at the Cow Palace, again spectacular.....One of the more emotional shows was Peter Frampton who was recording for his double live album. The crowd and the band were so into it, just magical........King Crimson, just a great band......Best all around show, James Cotton, Wishbone Ash and Uriah Heep. 5 hrs of pure music.....Lynyrd Skynyrd was second to The Marshall Tucker Band that night. I love Marshall Tucker but Lynyrd Skynyrd blew them away. They must have played Freebird for half an hour trading guitar licks back and forth. It was something to see and hear..........One of the first incarnations of The Jefferson Starship with Grace Slick and Paul Kantner and Pappa John Creach on violin.......Man with Deke Leonard and John Cipollina.......Robin Trower, never saw Procol Harum but saw Robin Trower many times. The original Journey, they called it "sounds of the city", it was like a Tuesday or Thursday, $5 to get in They had just or were going to release the 1st album Journey. If you haven't heard it your missing out. No pop shit just great music. Enough for now, would love to hear others stories.
