Please understand this.

When I was 15, the day before my 20-4 birthday, my friend Lynda and I were walking home from school as we always did when, at an intersection, I needed to retie my shoe. The traffic light was green for us so Lynda proceeded to cross in the crosswalk while I retied my shoe telling her I'd catch up. Halfway across the intersection she dropped a book she was carrying and bent down to pick it up and tripped, falling down. A driver (under the influence of alcohol) ran the red at this time and was heading right for her, his driver side front wheel headed right for her head.

When I saw what was about to happen I ran forward and tried to push Lynda out of the way which for the most part I was successful at. However, I found out later, I didn't quite push her out of the way enough. She was hit in the abdominal area by the cars right front fender and her right leg, from the knee down, was crushed by the passenger side front wheel. I however wasn't so lucky.

When the car hit us I was right in the front of it. In front of a Cadillac doing, what the police later estimated to be, 40 mph. I didn't even know what happened other than having thought very briefly to myself "Oh shit", then it was lights out for me at least temporarily. I found out later I was thrown 50 feet by the impact and hit the edge of the sidewalk with my right side. When I finally awoke I was in the hospital bandaged almost from head to toe and with all kinds of tubes and wires sticking out of seemingly everywhere. I found out later it was 10 days after the accident. I wasn't really sure where I was or how I'd gotten there at first but my memory or nightmare or daymare or whatever you call it of the accident slowly started coming back to me and I was surprised and very grateful that I had at least survived. One of my first visitors, other than the medical staff, was Lynda in a wheelchair. When I saw her and realized her right leg was missing I was confused, I thought I had pushed her out of the way and she was safe. I remember trying to cry for her and apologize at the same time but found myself to be in extreme pain upon doing so. I learned the extent of her injuries and my own.
Lynda's right leg from just above the knee down to her foot had been crushed and required amputation. The impact of the car hitting her abdominal area caused internal injuries which resulted in her having to have a hysterectomy.

My right leg was shattered from the ankle to the hip and would need to be reconstructed, leaving me with a slight limp, or so people tell me. My right knee and hip were both blown and would need to be replaced. My pelvic bone was split and would need to be repaired with a metal plate and screws. Something had slashed the erectile muscles and severed the penile nerves as well, I don't think the surgeons or insurance company really gave that much of a priority as instead of reconnecting the muscle tissues and nerve endings they just elected to carterize the severed tissues to seal them. Both testicles were ruptured and had to be removed but for some reason they put 2 artificial testicles into the scrotum. My right hand was shattered and had to be rebuilt, leaving me with approximately 50% dexterity lose. My right rib cage was also shattered and many of the ribs had to be replaced. My back and neck were both broken but by some extra extreme luck, or some might say by the grace of god, my spinal cord wasn't damaged so I wasn't left paralyzed and now have a metaI rod in my neck and back. I also had a compound skull fracture that left me with a plate in my skull and some hearing loss in my right ear.

When I say in my about me section that I have difficulty getting or attaining an erection it's because about 60% of the erectile muscles plus penile nerves were severed and not repaired as they should or could have been .

Wow...there but for the grace of whoever/whatever go I. I was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in 1990 due to a driver's negligence, and got busted up pretty good. I won't recount the numerous injuries, suffice to say it was both life threatening and life-altering, but nothing like what you've been through. I understand that this post is intended to provide some understanding and awareness, and not to provoke pity. Life is fragile and fleeting.

Oh Kelly how well I remember that accident, in fact every morning when I put my prosthetic leg on. Sometimes I'm still surprised we both survived. 💋
