Title: The Use of Corporal Punishment in the Handling of Indentured Female Domestics
I have been asked by this publication to provide a primer on the use of corporal punishment in the control of unruly domestic female indentured servants and field workers. It is not uncommon that sugar plantations in the Caribbean be worked and serviced by female indentured inmates from the British Isles. This relatively new source of workers is popular because of the rising troubles with the slave trade from Africa. Females from women's prisons and orphanages are easy and cheap to obtain and apart from the cost of transportation are usually inexpensive to maintain and easy to train in the various chores of the plantation. The trouble with any group of females of this ilk is discipline; they tend to be a bit lazy and talkative and if given their head will undoubtedly bring your plantation into ruin in no time at all. Strict corporal discipline is the only real answer in handling such situations.
Other forms of punishment, such as confinement to a cell are counterproductive since, when the culprit is in a cell, she cannot work in the fields or the house.
It is important to understand the fundamental form that corporal punishment takes. It is the use of applying intense pain in the form of a whipping to the anatomy of the female in order to modify her behavior so that she becomes obedient and performs whatever task you give her with swiftness and efficiency. The punishment must be remembered if it is to have an effect. Remembering a punishment is directly related to the length of time that the pain is sustained from the whipping. There is really two types of such pain. The more or less instantaneous and intense pain of the infliction of the stroke given in the whipping and the longer misery of the overall whipping after the whipping is given and the recovery begins. The first type of pain can last up to an hour or two whilst the second type of pain can last for weeks after the whipping has been given.
The length of time required for a girl to recover from a whipping will depend on the type of whipping given and the degree of the cutting of the flesh and the bruising that takes place. It is these two effects that must be carefully metered out in order that the whipping fit the crime, as it were.
In this article, I will define the types of instruments used and the number of strokes and relate them to the type of offence and the length of time that the culprit will require to get over the punishment. I will illustrate the various forms that a thrashing can take with actual details of whippings that I have given.
The are a few common considerations that go with all punishments of this nature and I will spend a few words on these initially. Note that as the primer progresses to the actual case studies, these common considerations are always met.

a. Always apply the whipping to that part of the anatomy that can take the punishment without causing permanent damage to the girl. The buttocks and the top of the thighs of each leg have large muscles and are of a fatty nature. This part of the body contains many nerve endings and can be quite sensitive to the lash. As you probably already know, this is the primary area of the anatomy to trash. The face and back as well as a good part of the front of the female anatomy is unsuitable for the application of the whip. The only exception to this is the lower stomach and the frontal crotch, which under extreme circumstances, outside the scope of this primer, can be used. One should not forget the sensitive area along the anal groove and the lower back side of the outer vaginal area and anus. This is a perfectly good region to inflict a thrashing and especially with the use of the birch using a technique known as "whipping in".
b. All whippings should be given while the culprit is completely naked. This is true for three good reasons. The first is that the area of the flesh to be punished can be seen by the punisher, and this is important to observe the degree of punishment being inflicted. The second is that it is humiliating to the girl being punished which forms part of the punishment. Remember we are trying to etch into the mind of usually a fairly foolish person a lesson that will not be forgotten. Lastly, if others observe the infliction of a thrashing on a completely bare female, it will be a good deterrent for the remainder of your indentured staff.
c. It is not hygienic, especially in hot countries, for women and mature girls to be allowed body hair. As a result, it is imperative that a strict regime of removal of all underarm and pubic hair be maintained. It is a much less disgusting task to whip a girl’s bottom if it is clean and smooth including the vaginal region and the anus.
d. It is, of course, natural that a women or girl being punished in this manner will cry, scream, beg and do almost anything to have her sentence reduced. It is imperative that none of these actions in any way, reduce the punishment. If you sentence a girl to 50 strokes of the cane and she is crying and begging to be let off by 30, take no notice of it and continue applying the cane as hard as you can until the full bill has been paid. If you in any way waver in this regard, let me tell you, disaster will follow and discipline on the plantation will suffer.
e. In order to be consistent with the application of each stroke of the whipping from beginning to end, apply each lash as hard as possible. Always take a proper balanced stance beside the culprit; always insure that she is properly presented for the lash and restrained. Whipping horses, birching blocks and whipping triangles or posts must be used. The punishments that I am considering here are of a severe nature and cannot be endured by the recipient when she is positioned in a casual manner.
f. Never use corporal punishment on a female in a fit of rage. The whipping should be well orchestrated and the same routine must always be followed. The girl is confronted with her misdeed. She is then lectured so that she knows that you know everything. She is then sentenced to the whipping. At this point the type of implement and the number of strokes are determined. The time of the punishment is then determined. I recommend that you sentence one day and whip the next. That way the culprit has time to think about her impending thrashing and she will build it in her mind. When you finally carry out the punishment you will have a very contrite and sorry girl.
The only three whipping implements used in true corrective discipline are the heavy spanking strap, and the penal cane and birch. Hand spanking and ordinary strapping do not provide sufficient pain and recovery time necessary to constitute an actual corporal punishment. The heavy spanking strap does not cut the skin surface although it welts it when used correctly. This strap can cause deep muscle bruising and this is its virtue. This implement is the mildest of the implements that I use on the indentured females of the plantation. It is used in first offence situations on the younger girls. 70 to 100 strokes of the heavy punishment strap laid on across the bum and thighs will redden the skin and make it swell and welt. The deep bruising caused by the three foot long 1/4 inch thick implement will change the bottom skin to a dark blue and green followed in a week or so by browns and yellows. Within two weeks the girl has recovered. She must, of course, try to keep her bottom out of harm during that time by keeping her nose to the grindstone and working efficiently.
The penal cane or birch inflicts that same degree of punishment depending on the number of strokes given. Both cut the surface of the skin. The cane, in addition causes deeper bruising. On the other hand the birch can literally remove the skin from a plump behind. If well applied both can make it impossible for the female to sit for about 4 days. Three to four weeks are necessary for complete healing.
The length of time for the actual punishment to be inflicted is different with these two implements. Fewer strokes of the cane are given and the punishment is over a little sooner. On the other hand, the birch cane be protracted in its delivery making it possible to thrash a bare bottom for an hour.
36 to 72 strokes of the cane are the usual bill for a more mature girl or women that has committed a more severe offence or has repeated a lesser offence. 50 to 150 strokes of the three switch penal birch can be given, changing birches about every 24 strokes. The birch is the implement best suited for whipping in although it is possible to whip in with the cane.
The anal groove is spread, usually by an assistant or another girl and the birch is applied down the center of the bum usually whilst standing over the head of the culprit. The effect is that the ends of the birch rods whip into the back of the sex and the anus. This area is extremely sensitive and cuts easily. If one wants to make it impossible to sit or to go to the toilet without pain a good six stroke "whip in" is a good choice.
The penal cane is a 40 inch ratan rod that is about « inches in diameter at the handle end and tapers down to about 1/4 inch at the tip. The ratan should be waxed regularly and this insures that it is whippy and flexible. You should be able to take both ends and almost form a circle with the cane. If it is used correctly, at the end of each caning, the surface of the cane will be covered in sweet and blood from the surface of the backside. The wax will insure that these fluids do not penetrate the wood. The cane can be easily cleaned in warm soapy water and then rewaxed. Six dozen strokes of the penal cane will cut and welt a girl’s bum cheeks from the very top, about one inch above the beginning of the anal crack to well down the back of the thighs. The tip works into the flesh and causes the largest welt and the deepest cut. As a result, it is important that the whipping bench that is used provide access to either side of the culprit’s backside so that she can be lashed from both sides. This insures that the deeper cuts and therefore the pain is equally distributed along either side of the anatomy.
The penal birch is made from three birch or willow rods. Such trees are not native to the Carribean but will grow there and have been transplanted from Great Britain. They should be cut about 36 inches long with the leaves and small branches removed. Hard buds which form in the spring are best left on and they create a unique sting and small round welt that will be remembered for days. The large ends of the three rods are fastened together with cord. The finished "rod" as it is referred to is then placed in a tray of simmering brine. The brine adds weight to the switches and, of course, the salt, when it enters an open cut will sting. The heat of the solution adds to the whip of the rods. Only three rods is best, as they fan out and provide three individual welts for each stroke. A rod with more switches tends to become a blunt instrument as the rods swing as a unit and do not cause the cutting and burning of a good penal or judicial rod. Experience gained in reform school and women's prisons where the birch is commonly used has proved that the three switch birch is one of the best instruments for skinning a bare bottom.
For really severe applications of corporal punishment, when the women has repeated an offence more than twice and that offence is bad is the famous double 36 punishment or the 36-60. This whipping applies 3 dozen of the strap to redden and welt the surface of the buttocks, causing a deep bruising that will last for several week, followed by a birching. 36 of the birch on top of the strapping will cut the cheeks and thighs well causing the surface burn and pain that will last for up to three weeks. A full 5 dozen will insure a completely skinned behind that will be remembered for a full month with the culprit being unable to sit for a week.
