Curious about the whole anal thing (Not On Myself)

Ok just to be clear to start this off I'm not doing this on myself but anyway I have this best friend that is into a lot of things and one of the things is anal. Now I know anal can be a pleasurable thing but apparently it is really messy and I don't really trust the videos on here when it comes to finding out more about anal because all of these videos make everything super clean and everything so I wanna ask you about your experience and if you like it because I don't wanna end up doing something that isn't good (tips are welcomed).
