Summer

I remember the way the summer sun kissed my skin
I remember the waves that broke on the sandy shore
Holding in deep breaths of salty air
And shivering at the touch of your fingertips

We thought that summer would last forever
That summer when your kisses on my neck
Made me shake with warm delight
And I begged you never to leave me

The last time I lay in these crystal grains of sand
Your body pressed me down against their grit
You whispered soft and stroked my hair
But I screamed with the ecstasy I only feel with you

I never thought I'd miss those humid nights
When the sweat against our skin was slick and warm
As we filled the little cottage with our scent
And claimed that beach as no one's but our own

Some nights I cry because I can't forget
The days we spent baking under that brilliant sun
The purest, whitest sand on all the Earth,
And the way your sun-dark skin felt on my hands

I wonder if we'll ever find that love again
The kind that made you kiss me head to toe
Where we knew each other best by sense of touch
As my summer skin fades to freckled pale
