The Fertile window
I love biology and have done fairly well in classes so far. I am working toward learning more about human sexuality, and that came about from a friend from school who was a lesbian. She is in a relationship and seems to be doing well financially, and liked the baby pic that I posted for a class project(what we looked like as c***dren). So, we chatted a little and she asked if I would be interested in donating sperm to her for a potential pregnancy. I was flattered, so we went through some basic steps...both of us got a STI test(important), we did a basic medical history screening- blood types and family history are good predictors of a healthy pregnancy. So, when I was married, I had no idea any of this stuff was important...my ex was a nurse and kept the biology stuff to herself. I guess after she got pregnant, it became all about diet and nutrition. Fast forward a few years, and now I am divorced, and someone is asking me to donate.
I didn't know that there were specific times of the woman's cycle that left her most fertile. I did the science research stuff, and found it is 12 to 15 days after the period. Good to know, right? But to make it more interesting, men are most fertile in the early morning which is why guys have "morning wood," and women are most fertile 10 am to 1 pm. So, the overlapping times of day, and the day of the monthly cycle have everything to do with fertility. Of course, I don't smoke or drink alcohol (obligatory New Years' toast), or do anything unhealthy. I think it was kind of cool learning this stuff from a science perspective, of course:) Anyhow, I donated in the obligatory sterile cup, and she and her s.o. were going to do in home insemination. It didn't work, but I think the human body has a few tricks in store to help if she were interested. We discussed N.I. (Natural Insemination), but I found out a few things about the preparation for that as well. Something called "Pre-seed" is sold in most pharmacies to help lubricate and prepare the ph(acidity) for best conditions for the little swimmers to make their journey. So, now I am waiting to hear from her on our last cycle. The appropriate wording for someone T.T.C.(trying to conceive) is Baby Dust...or wishing someone success in their attempt. It is way beyond chance and luck, though. For the scientist in me, I am satisfied in knowing all I can learn and be better. I guess I'll put this out there that I might consider helping one or two other women in their journey after we agree to the basics, as I think the journey is hard sometimes and knowing helps the process go easier.
