The discovery of the Higgs Field, the field that gives particles mass, was a great discovery. With experimentation, it has showed that the Higgs field is a false vacuum, which means that it's not the most stable it can be. Knowing this, if there were to be a massive event, like an incredibly massive star going supernova, that could cause the Higgs field to shift into it's most stable state, turning all matter around it to to the stable state, corrupting and destroying all matter in the universe.
